When I arrived at the terminal Sunday morning for the flight back to Nashville, my buddy Clint told me, “Matt Cogan passed away last night. We’re all hanging our heads pretty low this morning.” To which I replied, “Oh, I didn’t know him. I’m sorry for your loss Clint.”

Friends in the garage a lot of times are just faces and personalities. Sometimes you remember a name, but it’s usually just a first name.

I met Matt on a hot, humid day at Gateway Raceway in 2015. It was the first time I had ever worked at a NASCAR race. He couldn’t have been nicer. It was comforting talking to someone in a NASCAR vest that was welcoming and not at all intimidating. For the next couple of seasons I got to know him through chit-chat and trading stories. We weren’t best friends by any means, but I always had a great time hanging out, goofing off, and talking shop. It was always great seeing him. I’m praying for his family and friends. He was one of the best guys you could meet.

As far as the race days went, it was great as usual working with NKP. A lot of fun goofing off in the photo room. Beautiful sunshine Friday and Saturday, which made for some great shooting opportunities. I’m continually thankful to God for my family, friends, and the opportunity to live this dream.
