My first trip out west, and boy the traffic was… uh, traffic-y. The food was terrific though! King Taco, Wahoo’s Fish Taco, Claim Jumpers, and of course In-N-Out Burger highlighted the trip.

Auto Club Speedway is in quite an attractive location when the mountains aren’t hidden by smog/fog.

We flew in on Thursday and started to work on Friday. After one day of shooting, I was pretty frustrated with myself. I had a specific assignment that morning, which went fine, but after the assignment was complete, I just didn’t have my head in the game. Thankfully, things got better.

The main thing I’ll remember about this weekend was my first trip to the in-field care center. My reason for visiting was probably the mildest reason ever, but I’m not going to complain that my “injury” wasn’t severe enough. With about 15 laps to go, I was shooting on the outside, under the flag stand. There was a lot of grit and rubber floating around, and a tiny spec of rubber found its way into my eye. I tried to remove the debris from my eye but probably did more damage than good.

Those nurses and doctors were the best! Apparently it had been a fairly slow day (which is a good thing.) I think I saw 3 different nurses and 2 different doctors for my major injury. After a quick eye drop, swab, retina-scan, and prescription antibiotic I was on my way.

There was also a K&N West Series race in the area after the Xfinity race on Saturday. I hate that I wasn’t able to make it to Irwindale, CA to see friends and shoot at that historic speedway. Hopefully it’ll still be around the next time I come to town.
